THE BRESSAN SILK MILL

Of the eight silk mills which can be counted in Schio, the old Bressan Silk Mill(1) in Via Camin in the Magrè neighbourhood still remains, and its terracotta chimney(2) seems to converse with the one in the Fabbrica Alta and the bell tower of the nearby parish church. This establishment was documented in the Napoleonic and the Austrian land registers, while records traced the ownership structure and consistent production, they also highlighted the vitality of the factory in 1914 when it was under the management of the F.lli Bonacossa from Vigevano having 102 basins and 180 workers. In spite of the crisis in the sector during the thirties, the silk mill, managed by Arnaldo Bressan, employed about eighty workers, had 55 basins with 14 strands and filament attachment points and not only housed the raw silk spinning and waste production departments. The complex(3) made up of various structures organised around two courtyards was recovered during the eighties by the municipal administration which turned it into accommodation for the elderly. Although the buildings have acquired a new architectonic appearance, their original functions are revealed by the layout of the spaces, the large arched windows as well as the presence of the previously mentioned chimney.
