THE TONIN SILK MILL

The Tonin Silk Mill, former Fabris-Pozzani, can be found between Via S. Girolamo and Via S. Rocco, at the edge of the historical centre in S. Vito di Leguzzano; it continued to operate until 1957, but now it has been emptied of its machinery. The factory was established between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century by the efforts of Ludovico Fabris and Pellegrino Snichelotto, energy was provided by a steam power system evidence of which can still be seen by the now almost half-size chimney(1) rising up over the low factory buildings with their typical arched windows. It was enlarged and modernised by the Pozzani family during the twenties and it employed 260 workers who were mostly women. The great mass of the nineteenth-century building, overlooking Via S. Girolamohas two differently organised floors: the ground floor is characterised by a high base supporting a line of eight blank windows closely bordered with ashlar bands; the upper floor is lined with nine large arched windows, finished off with elegant cornices. The Manager’s house is situated on the northern side and the elegance of the architectonic lines and decoration denote the art nouveau style.
