THE MAULE - MASSIGNAN SILK MILL

The main body of the early twentieth-century Maule-Massignan Silk Mill which stands in Via S. Giovanni in Malo consists of a very long low shed(1) made of brick and local stone, protected by a wide sloping roof with a typical terracotta chimney(2) rising above it. The warm brickwork outlines the large closely-set rectangular windows at the sides and the round(3) window on the façade overlooking the road, and also shapes an elegant geometrical pattern along the line of eaves. The luminous interior highlights the beautiful wooden(4) ceiling trusses(5). Other buildings of lesser architectural value run parallel to its side, while a short three-storey portico construction(6) links the more important elements creating two successive courtyards. The use of modern technology by the silk mill allowed the employment of just 50 female workers, as one single worker was sufficient to take care of 10 basins at the same time. When the mill was closed down in 1976, the machinery was taken away.
