Giuseppe Saccardo
(1858 - 1926)

In 1885, having acquired a sound experience at the Garbin Wool Mill in Schio, Giuseppe Saccardo set up his own company for the production of cardboard spools and shuttles; this was linked to the textile sector and located along the present Via Battaglion Val Leogra in Schio. This factory was abandoned following a fire, and the production was moved to the district of Progresso on the side of the Tretto Plateau, were the rich water resources had previously been used by ancient mills and other craft workshops; Saccardo had an imposing multi-storey factory built here in 1892, provided with the most modern technology, and also a hydroelectric power station.
Giuseppe was soon to take a prominent place among the Schio entrepreneurs thanks to his varied economic activities which allowed him to extend his interests nationwide and made him a protagonist of his age. In 1905 he bought a spool factory in Tradate in the Varese province, and in 1906 he set up a factory in Novara which was joined by the Novarese spool factory owned by Fauser the following year. He was among the founders of the Dolomiti chocolate factory and the Schio cement factory, and played an active role in the foundation of the Burgo paper mills. He was also actively involved in various banking institutions.
