The Leogra Valley Canals

Apart from the Maestra Canal in the Schio, other minor though not less important canals flow through the Leogra Valley.

1 - From S. Antonio to Gisbenti:
a) a penstock system which carries water to the Ceolati and Chiumenti Hydroelectric Power Stations both property of the Cazzola Wool Mill and still operating;
b) along the Malunga tributary on the right of the Leogra: the Crucca and Menegona Canals(1), which are connected with corn grinding(2) (Rompato and Rossaro(3) Mills).

2 - From Gisbenti to Valli del Pasubio:
a) at Gisbenti: the Contrà Seghetta and Contrà Sega Canal(4): its water is taken from the orographical right side of the Leogra to supply forges and sawmills and then flows back into it;
b) at Valli del Pasubio: immediately after Gisbenti a ‘raised’ canal on the orographical right side of the Leogra flows through the small town and down to Contrà Ertele to supply the corn mills(5), forge and sawmill, before joining the Sterbisce or Sterpa, tributary on the right of the Leogra;
c) other corn mills in the district of Staro were supplied by canals primitively excavated(6) in the fields along the Sterpa Valley. A stretch of a canal, which can still be seen(7) in Contrà Gobbi, used to supply the Filippi Corn Mill(8), one of the last water-mills still operating up to 1990.

3 - From Valli del Pasubio to Ressalto:
a) Cavion Canal(9);
b) Molino al Forno Canal, perhaps the most ancient of all (1426);
c) Contrà Puja Canal(10);
d) Ressalto Canal.
These stretches of water, some of which can still be seen, used to supply corn mills, a forge, a fuller and the historical Cavion Sawmill, presently Pretto.

4 - From Ressalto to Ponte delle Capre:
an open canal excavated on the orographical right side of the Leogra starts from the Ressalto Hydroelectric Power Station(11) and flows under Trunk Road No. 46 at Asse, then into a ‘canal bridge’ which carries the water to the charging basin(12) for the Ponte delle Capre Hydroelectric Power Station(13).

5 - From Ponte delle Capre to Torrebelvicino:
this canal at one time supplied the Luccarda Corn Mill which was situated on the site of the present Fonte Margherita mineral water factory: it was excavated on the left of the Leogra below the bridge and flowed back into the torrent in front of the factory. It was used by Alessandro Rossi to produce electricity for his Torrebelvicino and Pievebelvicino Works. At Torrebelvicino it fell onto the turbines and so doing powered the wool mill machinery.
