THE CAVEDON SAWMILL

The Cavedon Sawmill(1), in the Schio district of Molette, which is still in operation today, is of particular interest due to the great deal of ‘evidence’ it contains: first of all the wooden wheel(2), restored in the fifties according to the original design; then the exemplary system of locks(3) on the Maestra Canal including discharge basin and channel, sluice-gates, cleaning grates, and finally, the long open shelter with the ‘carriage(4)’, the vertical toothed saw blade(5), the system(6) of wheels(7) and belts for sliding the carriage along, and the piled up tree trunks(8) ready to be cut(9) inside the courtyard. The location of the sawmill marks the final ‘fall’ of the Canal before it leaves the built-up area of Schio, and represents a historical site of particular interest: water-powered factories have been established on the very same spot ever since the late Middle Ages, and at the beginning of the 20th century the water of the Canal operated the Venetian-style sawmill as well the gears of one corn mill.
