BARATTONI PASTA FACTORY

In 1872, Umberto Barattoni together with other associates had this pasta-making factory(1) built on the outskirts of Piovene Rocchette. The factory which operated up to 1977, despite a few interruptions during the First World War and the period of Fascism, constantly renewed its own technology, passing from the original belt driven machines powered by steam to those powered by electricity. The production cycle concerned the operation of flour mixers(2), mixing water heaters, kneading machines, presses(3), rolling machines, turntable driers(4) etc.
Apart from ordinary pasta the pasta factory specialised(5) in the production of Naples, Bologna and Empoli types of pasta as well as gluten and egg pasta.
The edifice(6) is located on the ring road in a rather marginal position with respect to the historical centre of the town. It can be easily recognised by its corner position which allows the entire structure to be seen and by the chimney(7) rising above the ridge of the roof. The original appearance of the façade has been altered by recent paintwork, however the series of windows on two levels, some of which are walled up, reveal the productive function of the establishment thanks to their typical lowered arches and squared casing on the ground floor.
Despite the paintwork, decorative brickwork cornices can be seen on the higher portion surmounting the main entrance.
